Humane Society takes in homeless and refugees

"Founded in 1954, The Humane Society celebrates animals and confronts cruelty—to all animals, not just dogs and cats."

For that last few years, most of the Humane Society's efforts involved rescuing animals abandoned by the homeless and refugees. While they were able to provide a humane environment for their animals, the homeless and refugees were being left in the most inhumane conditions imaginable.

After much soul searching, the board of directors finally had to admit that humans were animals too and deserved the Humane Society's full attention.

In the first phase, only homeless and refugees with animals will be the priority. The goal is to provide shelter in "no kill" facilities when possible. "We realize that the homeless and refugees are used to death all around them, but we felt that a "no kill" facility will feel safer and more humane." explains the director at a local shelter.
